Spring is here, which means you should be thinking about preparing your air conditioning system for the season. Here local AC repair company Tyler Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration LLC shares some tips on preparing your air conditioning system for the warmer days ahead.
Replace the Air Filters
A typical air conditioner requires a new air filter every three months, though during periods of heavy use you may need to clean or replace it as often as once a month. Air filters come in standard sizes and are designed to be user-replaceable. This makes it easy to pick the right replacement air filter when you need it. Clean air filters help maintain good indoor air quality by preventing mold and pollen from getting into your indoor space. If your air conditioner has a humidifier, inspect its media panel and replace it if it looks clogged.
Have the Ductwork Cleaned
Air ducts require cleaning every five years or so, and springtime is the best time to do this. Clean air ducts prevent dust and dirt from getting recirculated indoors. In addition to removing dirt from within the ductwork, sealant may also be reapplied to the joints at this time. Having your air ducts cleaned regularly can lessen the strain on your air conditioning system, which will help reduce AC repair costs.
Reset the Thermostat
Your thermostat settings may be different during the spring, so make sure you reset your thermostat when the cooling season begins. Resetting your thermostat helps make your air conditioning system more efficient by keeping temperature settings at an appropriate level for the season. If you and your family follow fixed weekday and weekend schedules, consider upgrading to a 5-2 or 5-1-1 programmable thermostat, which lets you choose different cooling cycles for weekdays and weekends.
Review the Heating System Shutdown Procedure
Furnaces need to be properly shut down, especially when they burn oil. Leaving fuel in the reservoir can cause loud popping sounds the next time you start it back up. It’s generally a good idea to test your air conditioner at the tail end of the heating season. This way, if you run into trouble starting it back up, you’ll have more than enough time to schedule repairs.
