4 AC Troubleshooting Tips for Homeowners

If we had a dollar for every time a frustrated homeowner called us for an AC repair, only to find out it was a simple fix they could have handled themselves, we’d buy every client a new air conditioner.

Before scheduling a service call, there are a few common steps you can take that may restore your system’s function without needing to call in your local HVAC expert. While these won’t resolve major mechanical problems, they can help you determine whether your AC needs professional repair or just a quick adjustment. Let’s explore four essential troubleshooting tips every homeowner should know.

Check for a Tripped Breaker

If your air conditioner won’t turn on, start by checking your home’s electrical panel for a tripped breaker. The breaker controlling your AC unit may have switched off due to a power surge or electrical issue. If the breaker has tripped, reset it by flipping it back to the “on” position and see if the system restarts. This should always be the first step because a tripped breaker is one of the most common and easily fixable reasons an AC won’t start.

Repeated Tripping

However, if the breaker trips repeatedly, this indicates an underlying issue, such as:

  • An overloaded circuit
  • Faulty wiring
  • A failing AC component

Resetting it multiple times won’t fix the problem and could lead to further electrical damage or safety hazards. In this case, an HVAC professional should inspect your system to nail down the root cause.

Inspect Your Thermostat

A thermostat malfunction can prevent your AC from running even when the system itself is in working order. Begin by checking that the thermostat is set to “cool” mode and that the temperature is set lower than the current indoor temperature; it won’t start up otherwise. If your thermostat runs on batteries, replace them to ensure it’s got enough juice to operate properly.

If you’re able, check the thermostat wiring; loose or damaged connections can prevent the system from responding to commands. If you notice exposed or frayed wires, please don’t attempt to fix them yourself. A trained technician should inspect the thermostat and wiring to ensure safety and accurate communication between the unit and your AC system.

Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, preventing your air conditioner from cooling effectively or even causing it to shut down completely. Dust, pet dander, and debris accumulate in the filter over time, ultimately reducing indoor air quality.

For optimal performance, replace your air filter every one to three months. If you have pets or it’s peak allergy season, you should change filters every 30 days to maintain proper airflow and indoor air quality.

Visually Inspect Your Outside Unit

Your outdoor condenser unit is responsible for releasing heat from your home. If it’s blocked or damaged, your AC system can’t do its job. Visually inspect the unit, checking for debris, leaves, or overgrown vegetation restricting airflow. Clear at least 2 feet of space around the unit to allow proper ventilation.

Refrigerant Lines

Tend to the refrigerant line insulation, too. This insulation prevents energy loss, and damaged or deteriorated insulation can lead to reduced cooling capability. If you notice frozen coils or visible signs of damage, this could indicate a refrigerant issue or restricted airflow — both of which require professional repair.
